Why Sukhothai Counsel
What a focused practice makes possible
When a practice works in one area of law — and only one — the depth of understanding that builds over time becomes something clients can actually feel in their first conversation.

Six things that distinguish how we work
These are not aspirational statements. They describe how the practice has operated since 2016 and the practical difference that makes for clients.
Single-Area Expertise
We practise family law and nothing else. That means every insight from every matter we have handled — consultations, agreements, mediations — informs how we approach yours.
Senior Practitioner Contact
Your matter is not delegated down. The senior lawyer who takes your initial consultation remains your primary contact throughout the engagement. Files do not get handed across the room.
Written Summaries After Every Meeting
After each substantive meeting you receive a plain-language written summary within two business days. Nothing important relies on memory or notes taken in the moment.
Staged, Transparent Billing
Fees for multi-stage matters are invoiced in phases, with the anticipated cost of each phase agreed in advance. No surprises mid-engagement; no large upfront sum for work not yet done.
Cross-Border Capacity
We work regularly with international families — couples of mixed nationality, clients with assets in multiple countries, expatriates resident in Thailand. English is our working language.
Honest Assessment, Not Sales
We tell clients when they do not need legal representation at this stage. That kind of honesty — even when it means fewer instructions — is the basis of a relationship worth having.
In More Depth
What each advantage means in practice
Expertise built over time, not divided across fields
Most law firms handle family matters alongside commercial contracts, property transactions, and employment disputes. There is nothing wrong with that model, but it means family clients are working with practitioners who spend only a portion of their time on family law.
At Sukhothai Counsel, family law is everything. Over nine years, our practitioners have built pattern recognition — an understanding of how similar situations tend to develop, where agreements tend to become difficult, and what questions are worth asking early — that is simply not available in a generalist practice.
What this means for you
Your adviser has encountered your situation before — or something close to it
Likely complications can be flagged early, before they become costly
No time spent educating your lawyer on the basics of the field
What this means for you
Each phase of work begins with a clear scope and fee estimate
You decide whether to proceed at each stage — nothing runs automatically
Invoices are issued when work is complete, not months ahead of it
A structured process that keeps you informed
We use a consistent process across all our service types: intake conversation, written summary, scope agreement, work, review, and completion. Each stage is documented and shared with the client before moving forward.
This is not merely efficient for us — it gives clients a clear view of where they are in the process and what comes next. Clients who feel informed tend to make better decisions and feel less anxious about the overall situation.
Correspondence that is clear and prompt
We respond to client messages within one business day. We write in plain English — not legal prose full of qualifications — and we flag when something is uncertain rather than presenting every opinion as settled.
Meetings are scheduled at times that suit the client, including weekend mornings by prior arrangement. We are based in Bangkok and conduct all our work from the Lumpini office; we do not have satellite operations that might lead to inconsistent service.
What this means for you
Responses within one business day, for all queries
Saturday morning appointments available for working clients
Correspondence in plain language, without unnecessary complexity
How We Compare
Typical approaches versus ours
A straightforward comparison — with no intention to disparage — of how certain aspects of family legal practice tend to differ between generalist and specialist firms.

What Sets Us Apart
Three things that are genuinely unusual
The post-consultation summary
Every client who attends an initial consultation receives a written summary of what was discussed — the legal framework, the options considered, and any next steps — within two business days. This is our standard practice, not an optional extra. Clients consistently tell us that having something to read quietly at home, after the meeting, is where things click into place.
We tell you when to wait
Legal matters within families sometimes benefit from a period of quiet rather than immediate action. We will tell you when that is the case — when initiating a formal process might entrench positions or foreclose options that a short wait might preserve. This is not something most legal practices build into their advice. We think it should be.
A network for cross-border matters
For clients with connections to the UK, Australia, or Germany, we maintain working relationships with family law practitioners in those jurisdictions. This is not a referral arrangement — it is a professional network we use when a client's situation requires perspective from both sides of an international question.
