About Sukhothai Counsel

A practice built around the families we serve

We began with a simple premise: families navigating legal matters deserve a calm, thoughtful space — not an office that feels like a courthouse waiting room.

Our Story

How Sukhothai Counsel came to be

Sukhothai Counsel opened its Bangkok office in 2016, founded by legal practitioners who had spent years inside larger firms and noticed something consistent: family matters were being processed when they needed to be listened to.

The name draws from the ancient Thai kingdom known for its measured, deliberate governance. We chose it deliberately — as a reminder that considered action, taken at the right moment, tends to serve families better than speed alone.

In the years since, we have accompanied clients through first consultations that led nowhere — because that was what the situation called for — and through complex mediations that took months to resolve. We approach each engagement on its own terms.

Our practice operates entirely in English, serving both Thai nationals and international residents. We work in a single area of law, which means our attention is not divided across unrelated fields. Family law, in all its dimensions, is what we do.

Our Mission

To give families the legal clarity they need, in a space that feels safe enough to be honest — without pressure, without assumption, and without pretending that legal decisions are made in isolation from everything else that matters.

How We Work

We take on a limited number of clients at any time, so that each matter receives the attention it deserves. We do not delegate initial consultations to junior staff. The lawyer who meets you is the lawyer who knows your file.

Our Values

  • Honesty over comfort — we tell you what we see, not what you might prefer to hear
  • Pace that suits the family, not the billing cycle
  • Discretion as a professional standard, not a selling point
  • Written records of every discussion, shared with clients promptly

How We Operate

Professional standards we hold ourselves to

Lawyers' Council of Thailand

All practitioners at Sukhothai Counsel hold current registration with the Lawyers' Council of Thailand and maintain their continuing education requirements annually.

Privilege & Confidentiality

All client communications carry legal professional privilege. Documents are stored on encrypted systems, with access restricted to the lawyers involved in the relevant matter.

Written Records of Every Meeting

We send a written summary to the client after each substantive meeting. This is not a billing note — it is a plain-language record of what was discussed and what, if anything, will happen next.

Thai Family Law Mediation Practitioners Network

We participate in the professional network supporting mediation practice in Thai family law, which keeps us current on evolving norms and connects us with trusted mediators.

Cross-Border Competence

We maintain working relationships with family law practitioners in the UK, Australia, and Germany to support clients with international dimensions to their matters.

Staged Billing

For multi-stage engagements, we invoice in stages rather than in advance. Clients are informed of the anticipated fee for each phase before it begins, so there are no financial surprises.

Family law counsel in Bangkok, conducted carefully

Family law in Thailand covers a wide range of matters — marriage, property arrangements between spouses, parental responsibility, and the resolution of disputes within families. The legal framework draws on both the Thai Civil and Commercial Code and, in certain situations, international conventions to which Thailand is party.

Sukhothai Counsel works within this framework every day. Our team has specific experience with the formalities that govern marriage agreements under Thai law, the requirements for agreements to be registered and enforceable, and the practical considerations that arise when one or both parties hold foreign nationality or assets in more than one country.

Mediation — resolving disputes outside court with the assistance of a neutral third party — is often a preferable path for families. It is generally less adversarial, less expensive, and faster than litigation. It also allows families to reach arrangements that a court might not have the flexibility to order. We help clients think through whether mediation is appropriate, prepare thoroughly for each session, and navigate the process with steadiness.

Bangkok families have engaged Sukhothai Counsel for matters that range from a single consultation to extended engagements spanning several months. We approach each enquiry without assumption about how much or how little a client may need — and we are honest when our assessment is that a client does not, in fact, need legal representation at this stage.
